News Synopsis

Britain, France, Germany, and the United States have emphasized the need of ensuring the safety of nuclear plants threatened by the Ukraine crisis. The four leaders also restated their support for Ukraine against Russia's incursion in a phone chat on Sunday.

Moscow and Kiev have accused one other of bombarding a Russian-controlled nuclear station, heightening concerns of a disaster. Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelensky has encouraged Ukrainians to be cautious ahead of the country's Independence Day celebrations. "Russia could try to do something exceptionally ugly and brutal," he said in a weekend speech.

"One of the enemy's primary goals is to humiliate us," he added, but "we must be strong enough to reject all provocation," he added. Ukraine's Independence Day, on August 24, will also mark six months since Russia invaded the country.

On Sunday, UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, US Vice President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a conference call to discuss the conflict.Following its conclusion, they advocated military caution surrounding the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, where increased fighting has raised worries of a calamity similar to the 1986 Chernobyl accident.

The leaders applauded a compromise reached by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday that will allow UN inspectors to enter the country. The four presidents also stated that they "decided to maintain support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression."

On Sunday, Ukraine reported more missile attacks, notably in the town of Nikopol, near the Zaporizhzhia power plant. On Saturday, a new drone attack targeted Russia's Black Sea fleet in the Crimean port of Sevastopol.
