News Synopsis

As the UK braces for record temperatures, an amber warning for extreme heat has been issued for England and parts of Wales. On Monday and Tuesday, when England's alert level rises to red for the first time, the Met Office warning will be extended to southern Scotland.

Temperatures in England and Wales exceeded 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) on Sunday, with a high of 33 degrees Celsius in Flintshire, making it the hottest day of the year in the UK. On Monday, the temperature could reach 41 degrees Celsius, a UK record.

In 2019, Cambridge set a new temperature record of 38.7 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, Hawarden in Flintshire recorded 33 degrees Celsius, making it Wales's hottest day of the year so far, and the UK's hottest overall.

The highest temperature in England was 32 degrees Celsius in Nantwich, Cheshire, and 26.4 degrees Celsius in Auchincruive, Ayrshire, Scotland. Northern Ireland also had its hottest day of the year so far, with Armagh recording 27.7 degrees Celsius. The weather on Sunday packed beaches across the country, with cars lining up for miles at Camber Sands in East Sussex. The heatwave is being treated as a national emergency, according to Downing Street.
