News Synopsis

Twitter is reportedly developing a new verification process for its Blue subscribers that would require the submission of a government ID. According to the company, the function is now being tested in the United States, where it was discovered in the Android version of the Twitter app.

Nevertheless, it is unclear whether the feature is being tested outside the company.

According to TechCrunch, the new verification method requires the user to provide a photo of their official ID (both front and back). This, along with a selfie, will validate their Twitter accounts.

The addition of a photo ID and selfie requirement to Blue's verification procedure would aid in the combat against impersonation, according to the business.

This new authentication method, like the Edit Tweet and other features, is behind a paywall and only available to Twitter Blue members.

The microblogging platform has informed users that the new verification procedure would take around three minutes to complete and that their photographs and personal information will be shared with a third party to validate their identity.

According to the report, this suggests that the platform is partnering with a company to manage the authentication process rather than managing it directly.

It will also be a considerably more trustworthy means of verification, especially because users may simply pay a few dollars per month (or year) to obtain or maintain the colored "verified" checkmark. The checkmarks come in a range of colors - blue, grey, and gold - and, if that isn't enough, Twitter has added an "Official" label as well.

Last month, after launching Twitter Blue with verification services starting at Rs 650 per month in India, CEO Elon Musk stated that all old Blue badges will be removed soon.
