News Synopsis

Twitter complied with the IT Ministry's final notice before the July 4 deadline, after receiving a warning to either comply with new IT Rules, 2021 or face stricter action. According to reliable sources, the company finally complied with the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitYJune )'s 27 notice to take action on some controversial tweets.
The government had asked Twitter to act on content take-down notices issued under Section 69A of the IT Act, as well as non-compliance notices issued for failing to remove the content.
If Twitter did not follow the IT rules in 2021, it could have lost its immunity as a social media intermediary under Section 79 of the IT Act. In May, the IT Ministry directed the microblogging platform to appoint a resident grievance officer, a resident chief compliance officer, and a nodal contact person.
According to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, intermediaries, including social media intermediaries, must set up a grievance redressal mechanism for receiving and resolving complaints from users or victims.

Meanwhile, Twitter banned over 46,000 Indian user accounts in May for violating its guidelines, according to the microblogging platform's monthly compliance report.
