News Synopsis

Twitter says it will not allow advertisers on sites that deny the scientific consensus on climate change, reflecting the policies already in place at Google. While outlining the new policy, the company said, “Ads should not detract from important conversations about the climate crisis.”

There was no sign that this change would affect what users post on social media sites, which along with Facebook, are the target of groups trying to spread misleading claims about climate change.

Announced around the same time as Earth Day, the announcement came hours before the European Union approved a deal requiring big tech companies to vet their sites more closely for hate speech, disinformation, and other harmful content.

The company has already dedicated climate issues on its website and provided what is called a pre-bunks at last year's United Nations Climate Change Conference to counter false information on this issue.

Twitter has said that it would provide more information on how it plans to provide reliable, authoritative context to the climate conversations its users engage in, including from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
