News Synopsis

On Friday, the Government of India informed that ports of India under the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways have clocked an ''impressive'' growth rate of 6.94 percent in terms of traffic movement during the fiscal year 2021-22 when compared to that of the previous year. In its official statement, the government informed that around 105 million tonnes of cargo was transported through national waterways by The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). This is an increase of 25.61 percent year-on-year in cargo transported. IWAI is the statutory body in charge of the waterways in India under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. At this achievement, Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said: “This has not only helped us inch closer towards the achievement of these objectives within the specified time but also improving the performance of our major verticals. This trickles down towards ease of doing business and overall growth in trade and economic growth of the country.''
