News Synopsis

A recent media report confirms that Toyota will introduce a new diesel hybrid option for its popular Fortuner SUV in India. This diesel hybrid variant will mark a significant step for the Fortuner, as it will become the first vehicle in its segment, outside the luxury category, to offer such a powertrain. The model is expected to be launched in June, following its successful introduction in markets like South Africa and Australia.

What to Expect from the Toyota Fortuner Diesel Hybrid

As the diesel market in the affordable segments shrinks, SUVs remain one of the few categories where diesel engines continue to be in demand. Toyota is tapping into this trend by introducing the Fortuner diesel MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) model in India. The new version will be powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine paired with a 48v mild-hybrid system, delivering an output of 201 bhp at 3,000 rpm and a peak torque of 500 Nm at 1,600 rpm.

The Fortuner diesel hybrid will be available with a 6-speed automatic torque converter transmission. Buyers will have the option to choose between 2-wheel-drive (2WD) and 4-wheel-drive (4WD) models. Toyota has emphasized that the MHEV technology will enhance fuel efficiency by about 10%, thanks to regenerative braking, while also improving performance. The hybrid system is designed to retain the vehicle’s off-road capabilities, with the Fortuner diesel hybrid maintaining its 700 mm water-wading capacity.

Powertrain and Performance

The new Toyota Fortuner diesel hybrid will be powered by the same 2.8-litre diesel engine that is already available in the current Fortuner diesel model in India. However, the addition of the mild hybrid system will offer improved fuel economy and better performance, making it an attractive option for consumers who prioritize both power and efficiency.

The mild-hybrid system offers the benefits of increased torque, smoother engine operation, and improved efficiency, all while maintaining the Fortuner’s renowned off-road capabilities. Toyota’s commitment to providing an eco-friendly solution in the SUV segment is further enhanced with this new powertrain option.

Current Toyota Fortuner Lineup in India

At present, Toyota offers the Fortuner in India with two engine options: a 2.7-litre petrol engine and a 2.8-litre diesel engine. The petrol variant produces 164 bhp at 8,700 rpm and 245 Nm of torque at 6,700 rpm, while the diesel engine generates 201 bhp with a torque output of 420 Nm for the manual transmission and 500 Nm for the automatic version.

The Fortuner diesel automatic variant comes equipped with an automatic Idling stop/start function, which is aimed at improving fuel efficiency. The Fortuner petrol and diesel models in India are priced at Rs 35.37 lakh and Rs 36.33 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), respectively.
