News Synopsis

The developer of famous dating apps like Tinder and OkCupid, Match Group has sued the US-based tech giant Google over its restrictive billing policies on Android Play Store. The Developer claimed that the tech company "illegally monopolized the market for distributing apps" on Android by compelling apps to use its own billing system, and then taking a cut of the payments.

In a lawsuit, Match Group said, "Ten years ago, Match Group was Google's partner. We are now its hostage. Google lured app developers to its platform with assurances that we could offer users a choice over how to pay for the services they want.” The lawsuit is similar to Epic Games-Apple's legal fight over the same issue on Apple App Store payment policies.

In the year 2020, the developer of Fortnite game, Epic Games, filed a lawsuit against Apple and accused the tech company to be engaged in "anti-competitive" behavior by demanding a 30 percent commission on in-app purchases in the iOS app store. In this lawsuit, a federal judge in the US then ordered Apple to let developers add links to external payment options on the App Store. Although Apple largely won that lawsuit, the US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers sided with the Fortnite publisher, regarding restrictions on in-app purchases on the App Store.
