News Synopsis

Apple CEO Tim Cook has warned that the proposed antitrust law would have the consequences of making iPhones less safe, which could put users at risk to data-hungry companies looking to sidestep its privacy features.

The iPhone maker faces a double threat to the app store business from Congress and the European Union. Congressmen intend to loosen their understanding of the app economy and make the iPhone more accessible to third-party developers as part of efforts to increase competition.

User privacy issues are Cook's favourite topic  when Cook rarely appears publicly and is routinely referred to it as a "fundamental human right." The company's iPhone has been at the centre of several privacy battles in recent years.

Some of the prominent tech companies in the app economy have questioned Apple's way of doing business, saying that the company claims that its restrictive policies ensure user privacy and safety are unfairly benefiting its own business and are hurting theirs.

This is the latest way Apple's power over third parties has been the focus of extensive debate about the power of tech companies in the digital market and political speech.
