News Synopsis

Renault is set to bring back the Duster to Indian shores, marking one of the most anticipated automotive comebacks. Initially planned for a 2025 launch, the third-generation Duster's Indian debut has been pushed to 2026. Globally, the mid-size SUV had its unveiling in late 2023 and entered European markets in the first half of 2024.

Now, in a significant development, Dacia—a fully-owned subsidiary of Renault—has revealed plans for a new all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant of the Duster. The announcement was made by Denis Le Vot, CEO of Dacia, during the 2025 Car of the Year final press conference.

Renault Duster AWD: What to Expect

According to a report by Autocar UK, the upcoming AWD Duster will incorporate a hybrid powertrain with an electrified rear axle. Confirming the same, Le Vot said that the AWD Duster will feature both hybrid and automatic transmissions and will also offer an LPG variant.

Key powertrain options include:

  • 1.0-litre bi-fuel three-cylinder engine: Producing 99 bhp.

  • 1.2-litre mild hybrid engine: Delivering 128 bhp.

  • 1.6-litre full hybrid unit: Generating a robust 138 bhp.

This advanced technology is expected to extend beyond the Duster to the Bigster, Dacia’s seven-seater SUV, which shares the same CMF-B platform co-developed by Renault and Nissan. Interestingly, this innovation might also be adopted by Nissan, Renault’s global alliance partner.

Le Vot further hinted at a fully-electric Duster, which is part of Dacia’s roadmap. However, the first EV from Dacia will be the Sandero, slated for launch in 2027. The all-electric Duster is likely to arrive by 2030-31, coinciding with the next generation of the iconic SUV.

Renault Duster AWD: Will It Arrive in India?

The third-generation Renault Duster’s return to India has been deferred to 2026. While the first-generation Duster in India offered an AWD option with the 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine, it remains uncertain if the electrified AWD version will be introduced in India.

Notably, Renault has phased out all diesel engines from its global portfolio. The earlier Duster AWD diesel delivered 109 bhp and 245 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

As India shifts towards greener mobility, Renault’s focus on hybrid and electric technologies might influence the decision to introduce the AWD hybrid Duster in the Indian market.

Global Leadership and Collaborative Innovation

The third-gen Duster’s development reflects Renault’s strategy to stay at the forefront of innovation. With the CMF-B platform, the company aims to offer robust solutions across global markets while fostering collaborations with Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Renault’s renewed focus on all-wheel-drive capability, hybrid powertrains, and future electric versions underscores its ambition to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.

Conclusion

The third-generation Renault Duster, with its innovative all-wheel-drive hybrid technology, is poised to set new benchmarks in the global SUV market. While its global debut is a significant milestone, its delayed return to India has kept enthusiasts eagerly waiting.

The inclusion of cutting-edge features such as electrified rear axles, multiple hybrid powertrains, and LPG variants ensures that the Duster remains relevant and competitive. Renault’s collaboration with Dacia, Nissan, and Mitsubishi signifies a shared commitment to leveraging advanced platforms like CMF-B.

As the industry leans toward sustainability, Renault’s roadmap for a fully-electric Duster by 2030-31 highlights its dedication to eco-friendly mobility.

For India, the eventual arrival of the Duster AWD could redefine the mid-size SUV segment, aligning with the nation’s push for greener technology. The new Duster promises a harmonious blend of innovation, performance, and sustainability, keeping it a fan favorite across markets.
