News Synopsis

According to the Fairwork India report of 2021, the salaries or the wages paid to the contractual workers, who lift the heavy weight of the entire business model are not living wages. The report says that the continuous decrease in rate cards and incentives, along with increased input costs of petrol and platform commissions have made it worse for the Indian gig workers like delivery partners and drivers.

Fairwork India rates companies on how they treat their gig workers focusing on five principles, fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, and fair representation.

It included 11 digital platforms like, Flipkart, Urban Company, BigBasket, Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon, Dunzo, PharmEasy, Ola, Uber and Porter. Balaji Parthasarthy, the lead investigator at Fairwork has said that they reached out to some of these digital platforms but have not received any kind of response from them yet.

In order to raise the conditions of the Indian gig workers, the organisation is aiming to reach out to foreign based limited partners who invest in venture funds.
