News Synopsis

Tesla has taken a major step toward its India entry by leasing office space at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. This marks the company’s third office in India, following earlier setups in Pune and Bengaluru. According to a report by the Economic Times, Tesla has rented a 30-seat co-working space inside Phoenix Market City. The agreement is for one year, with a three-month lock-in period and a monthly rent of around Rs 3 lakh.

Tesla Finalises Locations for India Showrooms

Beyond office space, Tesla is solidifying its physical presence in India with two upcoming showroom locations. The flagship dealership will be in Mumbai’s BKC, where the EV giant has secured a 4,000 sq ft commercial unit. Reports indicate the company is paying a monthly rent of approximately Rs 35 lakh, translating to Rs 900 per square foot. The lease agreement for this premium showroom spans five years. The second Tesla showroom is planned for Aerocity in Delhi, another prominent commercial hub.

Affordable Tesla Models Headed for Indian Market

Tesla is expected to debut its affordable electric vehicles — the Model 3 and Model Y — for Indian consumers. These vehicles are positioned as entry-level options in the Tesla lineup and are likely to attract EV enthusiasts looking for premium offerings at a relatively accessible price point. Both vehicles have been spotted undergoing testing on Indian roads, signaling imminent launches.

Additionally, Tesla is reportedly working on a more budget-conscious version of the Model Y, which could further increase its appeal in a cost-sensitive market like India.

Homologation Process Underway for Model 3 and Model Y

According to IANS, Tesla has initiated the homologation process for both the Model 3 and Model Y in India. This certification is crucial for any imported vehicle to be registered and sold in the Indian market, ensuring compliance with local safety and emission standards. The process is a clear indication that Tesla is inching closer to formal product launches.
