Tesla to Keep its Factory Shut in Shanghai due to Lockdown

News Synopsis

The EV maker, Tesla has announced that it would keep its manufacturing plants in Shanghai shut after the strict Covid-19 restrictions. Despite a difficult quartet, the company has managed to deliver more than three lakh vehicles in the first quarter of 2022.

Tesla told its employees on Sunday to stay home to comply with the Covid restrictions in the city. Workers in the eastern part of the city are still facing Covid-related movement restrictions and there is still no word on when the city will lift the restrictions. 

About 10,000 medical employees from a number of Chinese areas came to Shanghai in recent days to help the fight against Covid-19 as a city of 25 million population sees a surge in infections. Shanghai factory is among the largest plants of Tesla producing nearly 6,000 Model 3 and 10,000 Model Y vehicles per week.

Tesla delivered 3,10,048 vehicles in the first quarter of 2022. Elon Musk, the CEO of the company has said in a tweet, “This was an exceptionally difficult quarter to supply chain interruptions and China zero Covid policy. Outstanding work by the Tesla team and key suppliers saved the day.”
