News Synopsis

Vehicle deliveries at Tesla Inc. increased in the first quarter but fell short of expectations as the company suffered from global supply chain disruptions and a brief shutdown of Covid-19 at its Shanghai plant.

Tesla said that it delivered 310,000 vehicles globally in the first three months of the year, rising above 68% from the same period a year ago. It is expanding production capacity to meet booming demand, adding new factories as it tries to maintain growth in deliveries by an average of 50%.

Tesla's largest plant in Shanghai stopped production for the last four days of the quarter due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in the city, prompting questions about how it would affect quarterly deliveries. The factory manufactures Model 3s and Model Ys, and last year Tesla sold more than 470,000 cars manufactured at the factory.

The total delivery of Model S and Model X was 14,724. Tesla also delivered a total of 295,324 Model 3 sedans and Model Y compact sports utility vehicles.

Tesla also started production at its new plant in Germany last month. It is also planning to open another factory in Austin, Texas. The company plans to ramp up 500,000 vehicles a year, starting with the Model Y.
