TCS to Expand 4G Network in India, Amidst 5G Rollout Efforts by Competitors

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced on Monday that a consortium led by the IT giant has received an advance purchase order valued at over Rs 15,000 crore from the state-run telecommunications company, BSNL. The order is for the deployment of a fourth-generation mobile (4G) network across India, further expanding the country's connectivity infrastructure.

This development takes place at a time when competitors Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are actively enhancing their infrastructure for 5G technology nationwide. In April, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) initiated 4G services in pilot mode in select areas of Punjab as a precursor to the full-scale rollout of 4G services. The company has already begun live testing of its 4G services using an indigenous telecom stack at 135 tower sites.

In a statement released on April 3 by Tejas Networks Limited, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, it was revealed that the company secured an order worth Rs 696 crore from BSNL. This order was for the upgrade of BSNL's all-India IP-MPLS based Access and Aggregation Network (MAAN). Tejas Networks, renowned for its wireless networking products, will supply, install, and commission over 13,000 units of its 'TJ1400' series of next-generation access and aggregation routers as part of the contract.

The initial supplies and deployment of the network are expected to be completed within the next 18 months, as stated in an exchange filing by Tejas Networks on Monday. Tejas Networks, an Indian company specializing in optical, broadband, and data networking products, serves telecom service providers, internet service providers, utilities, security agencies, and government entities across 75 countries.

In morning trade on Monday, shares of TCS were trading 0.70 percent higher at Rs 3,245.05 apiece. Similarly, shares of Tejas Networks on the BSE were trading 0.97 percent higher at Rs 648.20 apiece.
