News Synopsis

Surfshark, a popular VPN provider, has announced that it will be shutting down its servers in India due to the Indian government's policies regarding user data retention. On April 28, the Indian government issued guidelines directing companies providing virtual private network (VPN) services in the country to record and store user information.

Recording and sharing user data violate the fundamental principles of VPN, and businesses have expressed reservations about the new guidelines. “Surfshark proudly operates under a strict “no logs” policy, so such new requirements go against the core ethos of the company,” the company said in its official statement.

The company further commented, “The infrastructure that Surfshark runs on has been configured in a way that respects the privacy of our users and we will not compromise our values – or our technical base."

This comes just days after ExpressVPN announced that it would be removing its servers from the country. Surfshark has stated that the servers will be shut down once the new rules take effect, but users will be able to use its India servers until then. The new rules will go into effect on June 27.

Users will be able to use the company's virtual Indian servers, which are physically located in Singapore and London, once the company's Indian servers are shut down. This is similar to what ExpressVPN announced previously.
