News Synopsis

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, stated that the company's satellite internet division, Starlink, has been in contact with Apple.  "We've had some promising conversations with Apple about Starlink connectivity," adding: "iPhone team is obv super smart." Musk tweeted Thursday, adding,  This week, Apple announced the iPhone 14, which will use satellite service to allow users to make emergency calls even when there is no signal.

Musk also stated that  "closing link from space to phone will work best if phone software & hardware adapt to space-based signals vs Starlink purely emulating cell tower,"  implying that Apple's phones would have to be modified if they were to connect to Starlink satellites.

Starlink is a subsidiary of SpaceX, Musk's space exploration firm. Starlink places satellites in orbit that beam internet broadband back to Earth. According to Musk, the goal of Starlink is to bring internet to remote parts of the world and other areas where access to the internet is difficult, such as Ukraine.

Starlink is available for purchase by consumers, but it has also struck deals with businesses. T-Mobile announced in August that it was partnering with Starlink to provide customers with expanded phone service. Starlink has also established relationships with some commercial transportation companies.
