News Synopsis

Amid the worst economic crisis in Sri Lanka, its entire Cabinet of Ministers resigned on Sunday night. While interacting with the media, the Education Minister of Sri Lanka, Dinesh Gunawardena informed that the Cabinet Ministers handed over their resignations to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. However, he gave no reason for the mass resignation. Political experts believe that this was due to intense pressure from the public. There have been extensive protests over the "mishandling" of the economic crisis, which was followed by the shortage in the foreign exchange reserve all over the country. The enraged public has been demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Following a violent protest at the residence of Rajapaksa on March 31, the Sri Lankan government announced a state of emergency. Also, there have been rumors that to handle the economic crisis, Rajapaksa may opt for an interim government. The opposition party of Sri Lanka, Samagi Jana Balawegaya, held a protest in the capital against President Rajapaksa's move to impose a state of emergency and other restrictions. Opposition leader, Harsha de Silva said: "We will protect democracy in Sri Lanka."
