News Synopsis

Spotify has acquired Heardle, a popular interactive music guessing game. The look and feel of the game, which challenges players to identify a short burst of a mystery track, will not change, according to the streaming giant. Heardle is based on the popular five-letter word guessing game Wordle, which was acquired by the New York Times (NYT) in January.

However, some Heardle fans have used four-letter words in response to problems that have arisen since the sale. A common complaint was that game statistics were incorrect. "Heardle, and my Heardle stats, have been a consistent source of tiny daily joy for me," writer Brendan Hay tweeted, "so, naturally, Spotify has to ruin that by taking over and deleting my old stats."

Other users reported that Heardle displayed messages indicating that it was unavailable in their area. Spotify has been contacted by BBC News for comment.

According to the press release, the "look and feel of the game will remain the same, and it will remain free to play for everyone."

"As of today, players can listen to the full song at the end of the game on Spotify," the company announced.

Spotify's Jeremy Erlich wrote, "We are always looking for innovative and playful ways to enhance music discovery and help artists reach new fans. Heardle has proven to be a really fun way for millions of fans to connect with songs they know and love as well as new songs." According to TechCrunch, the purchase was a "strategic" move.
