Smartphone shipments in India drop for the third consecutive quarter

Lately, smartphone prices have been skyrocketing. Even the price of budget smartphones has also been increasing significantly. According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), the average selling prices (ASPs) of smartphones continued to hike for the fourth consecutive quarter in India.

The average selling prices have reached an all-time high of $211 in the January-March quarter. According to the report, MediaTek-based smartphones had a market share of 51% at an Average Selling Price of $174 whereas Qualcomm registered a recovery with its market share increasing to 28% with an ASP of $244.

The sub-$200 segment of the smartphone also struggled as shipments decreased by 16%, but the mid-range segment of $200-$300 marked growth as it increased to 18% share from 14% in the first quarter.

It was also reported in the report that out of the total devices shipped in the country, 5G smartphones accounted for around 31%. 5G is estimated to be commercially launched by the end of the year. Overall, India's smartphone shipments declined for the third consecutive quarter, shipping 37 million smartphone units in the first quarter, a drop of 5% (YoY).
