News Synopsis

Singapore Airlines Ltd. is committing to a strategy of working with international partners to establish an overseas hub after the pandemic exposes the economic crisis associated with the lack of a domestic air travel market.

The airline will be open on the occasion and will appreciate the potential synergies, CEO Go Chun Fung said in an interview on Tuesday.  After Singapore and most other countries around the world reopened their borders to travel without quarantine, airlines were able to increase traffic to more than one million passengers, the highest since the pandemic began.

Singapore Airlines has tried to expand its business in the domestic market, but its success has been mixed. The airline sought to expand its presence in Thailand in 2014, but when the pandemic broke out, the joint venture was finally liquidated.

The multi-hub strategy involves setting up airline ventures in another country that can leverage the potential growth of this domestic market and profit from all international flow-on services.

Singapore Airlines is affiliated with Tata Sons Pvt, an Indian conglomerate to establish Vistara, a full-service airline that began flying in 2014. Vistara currently serves 9 international destinations and 31 India but has not yet made a profit.
