News Synopsis

It is the fourth consecutive day that Shanghai’s local asymptomatic infections have increased. The city health official Wu Jinglei has said when it comes to the entire situation of epidemic control and prevention that the city is facing, it is very complex and serious, and it is also a very big test for the health department.

China's financial hub of Shanghai reported a record daily surge in covid-19 infections, and authorities were scrambled to test residents and control Omicron variants while Disney resorts were closed until further notice.

Outbreak response in Shanghai complexes and neighbourhoods varies in severity, with some opting for lockdowns of up to two weeks. Some people in other blocked areas said they were not informed of how long they had to stay home.

Mainland China reported a total of 1,947 new cases of infection with confirmed symptoms on Sunday, including the infection in Shanghai. National Health Commission (NHC) data increased from 1,656 the day before.

Although the number of infections is negligible by global standards, Shanghai is swiftly following China's "dynamic clearance" policies, closing schools and testing housing development to stop the spread of the virus.
