News Synopsis

In a bid to fight terrorism, the meeting of the Regional Anti-Terror structure (RATS) will be held in New Delhi on Monday. Delegations from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) countries are participating in the meeting. The RATS is a permanent anti-terrorist squad stationed in Uzbekistan that is part of the SCO. The major goal is to encourage member countries to work together against terrorism.

The SCO leadership is rotated every year among the member states. India is now the chairperson of the executive council. According to reports, the security situation in Afghanistan is expected to be discussed, as the Taliban has used violence and it is believed that it could become a terror launch pad and drug smuggling hub. Other than this, the anti-terror teams from China, Pakistan, Russia, and other Asian countries will also participate.

The decision by Pakistan to send a three-member group to India is important at this time because it is the first such official delegation to visit India since Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif took office last month. The National Security Advisers/Secretaries of the National Security Councils of India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan will participate in the meeting.
