News Synopsis

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, the United States intelligence agency has warned that the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin is gearing up for a long war in Ukraine. Moscow ordered its troops to shift their focus on seizing the Donbas region after they faced strong resistance from Ukraine as they attempted to capture the capital, Kyiv. However, the US Intelligence told that even after this, Russian forces remain in a stalemate.

On Tuesday, Avril Haines, the director of national intelligence, informed a US Senate committee that the Russian President was still considering "to achieve goals beyond the Donbas", but that he "faces a mismatch between his ambitions and Russia's current conventional military capabilities".

She further said that Vladimir Putin was "probably" relying on weakening support for Ukraine by the US and EU amid rising inflation, scarcity of food, and energy prices. However, Vladimir Putin could resort to "more drastic means" as the war continues, although Kremlin would only deploy nuclear weapons if Mr. Putin perceived an "existential threat" to Russia. Scott Berrier, Defense Intelligence Agency Director informed that the Russians and the Ukrainians were "at a bit of a stalemate.”
