News Synopsis

In retaliation to the limitation of services of social media giants such META incorporation, Twitter, Google, etc, Russia in a drastic decision has initiated to block Western technology platforms in the country. This has cut the citizens of the country from the rest of the world. These platforms include Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, etc. This has shattered the vision of open global internet. In the past few years, China has also imposed similar restrictions on these social media giants. Russia's tech and communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, yesterday informed that it has completely blocked access to Facebook. The regulatory authority also criticized Twitter and Youtube. Some media reports reported that access to these has also been blocked. Roskomnadzor accused Tiktok of removing certain state media content from its platform. It said these actions violated  "free distribution of information" policy. In response to this Tiktok spokesperson said: "We continue to respond to the war in Ukraine with increased safety and security resources to detect emerging threats and remove harmful misinformation. We also partner with independent fact-checking organizations to support our efforts to help TikTok remain a safe and authentic place." Nick Clegg, Facebook's president of global affairs also responded to the restrictions imposed on the company by Russia and said: “These restrictions will cut off Russians from reliable information and deprived of their everyday ways of connecting with family and friends and silenced from speaking out."
