News Synopsis

As millions of US women face restricted access, major corporations such as Disney, JP Morgan, and Facebook owner Meta have told employees that they will cover employee travel expenses for abortions. It follows the US Supreme Court's landmark decision that overturned the constitutional right to abortion. The decision opens the door for individual states to prohibit the procedure. Other companies, such as Amazon, had already made similar announcements.

However, since the ruling, an increasing number of companies have confirmed that they will cover travel costs for employees who leave their home state to obtain an abortion through their health insurance plans. Disney said it recognised the impact of the Supreme Court decision and remained committed to providing employees with "comprehensive access" to affordable healthcare, including family planning and reproductive care, "regardless of where they live."

Disney employs approximately 80,000 people at its Florida resort, where the governor has already signed a ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy into law, which is set to take effect on July 1. According to a staff memo dated 1 June and obtained by Reuters, banking giant JP Morgan also told its US employees that it would cover travel expenses for medical services, including "legal abortions."
