News Synopsis

Riot Games, the studio known for the popular game League of Legends is ready to pay $100 million for the settlement of a 2018 gender discrimination case. California’s Department of Fair Employment & Housing has said that this settlement would remedy the violations against 1,065 women employees and 1,300 women contract workers.

The 2018 case investigation was led by the Los Angeles Times and the news website Kotaku. The complaint was filed against the company, accusing it of fostering a “Bro Culture”, including an email chain rating the company’s “hottest women employees.”

The Director of DFEH, Kevin Kish has said that the settlement world has a lasting impact on Riot Games and will be a message for all industries in California to provide equal pay and to provide a workplace free from discrimination and harassment.

Riot Games agreed to settle the case for $10 million in 2019 but DFEH and another agency blocked it saying that the victims were entitled to a much higher amount.

Riot Games’ executive team published a letter to its staff saying that the settlement is the right thing for both company and all those who felt that the company was not able to fulfil its standards and values.
