News Synopsis

The Ministry of Commerce-backed e-commerce protocol, Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), recently unveiled two significant partnerships with Google and Meta. These collaborations are set to elevate ONDC's accessibility to small businesses by harnessing the potential of Google Maps and WhatsApp, aiming to enhance net transactions among consumers and enterprises.

Leveraging Google Maps for Mobility Services

One of ONDC's key ventures involves integrating Kochi Metro's mobility services into its platform via Google Maps. This initiative enables users to seamlessly book metro tickets directly through the ONDC framework within Google Maps. The integration aims to streamline accessibility and transactions for commuters, thus expanding ONDC's user base.

ONDC's Integration with WhatsApp for Small Businesses

Simultaneously, ONDC is set to merge with WhatsApp, allowing small businesses to streamline their onboarding processes within the framework. This collaboration aligns with Meta's strategic focus on monetizing the Indian market in 2024, as emphasized by Sandhya Devanathan, India Head of Meta, in a recent interview.

Accelerated Adoption and Growing Transactions

Managing Director and Chief Executive of ONDC, Thampy Koshy, highlighted the substantial growth in ONDC's adoption. Over 5 million monthly transactions were recorded in Bengaluru within 12 months, marking a significant surge from the initial 1,000-1,200 transactions announced in January.

Scaling Public Mobility Services with Google Maps

Miriam Daniel, Vice President at Google Maps, affirmed the forthcoming expansion of ONDC's adoption within Google Maps to encompass various public transport services, enhancing the platform's accessibility and utility for users.

Amplifying Adoption from Corporations and Regulatory Support

Koshy emphasized the interest displayed by major corporations, including Hindustan Unilever, in ONDC's framework. Moreover, the Telecom Bill, recently tabled in Parliament, is poised to bolster such adoption, fostering India's digital economy.

ONDC's Drive for Inclusive Skilling Initiatives

The collaborations between ONDC and Meta focus on empowering small businesses through digital skilling initiatives. This emphasis aims to facilitate the migration of businesses onto digital platforms like WhatsApp, presenting a more impactful model than Meta solely joining ONDC as a seller platform.

Rising Significance of Public Mobility Services and Merchant Growth

The availability of public mobility services on digital platforms has witnessed an uptick, demonstrated by initiatives like Delhi Metro Rail Corp's ticketing service through WhatsApp. Koshy previously highlighted over 150,000 merchants on the platform, encompassing various sectors, including mobility and restaurants.

Encouraging Digital Adoption and Future Prospects

ONDC's alliances with tech giants signal a significant stride in advancing digital commerce and providing small businesses with essential tools and platforms. The focus on digital skilling and collaborations underscores the platform's commitment to fostering a thriving digital ecosystem for India's businesses.

More Than Just Sellers:

Meta Prioritizes Enabling and Skilling: Notably, Meta isn't joining ONDC as a seller platform. Instead, their focus lies on skilling and enabling small businesses, recognizing the long-term value of creating a healthy and competitive ecosystem rather than simply adding another seller to the mix. This approach bodes well for the overall growth and sustainability of ONDC.

ONDC's Momentum is Unstoppable:

With strategic partnerships, rapid user adoption, and a focus on skilling, ONDC is poised to transform the Indian e-commerce landscape. By empowering small businesses and fostering an open and fair ecosystem, ONDC is paving the way for a more inclusive and thriving digital economy.
