News Synopsis

According to new data from a private research firm in Mumbai, the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy Pvt, India’s job creation platform is morphing into a greater threat as a growing number of people are no longer looking for work.

Frustrated at not being able to find the right kind of job, millions of Indians, specifically women are leaving the labor force entirely. The data also stated that more than half of the 900 million Indians of legal working age do not want a job.

The challenges of job creation in India are well documented. With about two-thirds of the population between the ages of 15 and 64, competition for everything but domestic work is fierce.

There are various explanations for the decline in labor force participation. Unemployed Indians are often students and housewives. Many of them live on rental income, pensions for elderly household members, or state transfers. In a world of rapid technological change, others are simply lagging behind when it comes to skills required in the market.
