North Korea Hackers stole $400 Million in Cryptocurrency in 2021

News Synopsis

According to Chainalysis, North Korea has stolen around $400 million worth of cryptocurrency in 2021. The blockchain firm also reported that these cyberattacks were for investment firms and centralised exchanges. The report also said that the country gained custody of the funds and also started a laundering process to cover up the cash-out.

North Korea is also expected to have $170 million as current balances that are being controlled by the country and are yet to be laundered. Among this amount, one third was from attacks that took place in 2016. 

The United Nations has also mentioned that North Korea linked hackers have stolen $316 million in 2020 in order to support the country’s faltering economy and also to fund its nuclear program. Whereas, North Korea has denied all the hacking allegations.
