News Synopsis

Following US reports that Moscow was turning to Pyongyang to replenish stockpiles, North Korea claims it has never supplied weapons to Russia and has no plans to do so. Russian rockets and artillery shells, according to US authorities, are being purchased by Russia from North Korea.

They said that these actions, together with purported acquisitions of Iranian weapons, demonstrated that Western sanctions were hampering Russia's efforts in the Ukraine War. At the time, Moscow denied the reports.

Any transfer of weapons between the two nations would be against United Nations sanctions. Rumors were allegedly spread by the US and other "hostile forces" in order to "pursue its base political and military aims."

Russian sales from North Korea "could include literally millions of rounds, rockets and artillery shells." a US state department spokeswoman stated in early September.

John Kirby, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, then sought to qualify that statement by stating that the purchases had not yet been made and that there was no proof the weapons would be utilized in the conflict in Ukraine.

Although it possesses missiles that resemble Russian ones, North Korea has a lot of Soviet-era weapons that were designed by the Russians.

The statements came in response to claims by US officials that the first drone shipments had arrived in Russia and that Russian drone operators had been to Iran for training. Iran has said it will not supply weapons.

Despite employing cutting-edge weapons like cruise missiles, Russia's military has suffered losses as a result of its invasion of Ukraine in February.
