News Synopsis

Concerned about the fate of foreign medical graduates returning from Ukraine to India, on Friday the National Medical Commission (NMC)  has allowed these graduates to complete their internship or practice at Indian medical colleges.

The NMC has allowed the FMGs to conduct internships in India and stated that foreign medical graduates who do not fall under the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations are subject to the regulations of the former Indian Medical Council Act of 1956.

According to the provisions sub-section (3) of section 13 of IMC, Act FMGs are required to conduct an internship in India if they have not completed the practical training in the foreign country where they were studying abroad.

NMC acknowledged that the FMGs were facing hardship in getting registered in some of the state medical councils due to the Foreign Medical Graduates Licentiate Regulations 2021 and Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship Regulations 2021 by NMC.

NMC has asked the state medical councils to process the completion of the internship of these candidates provided they have cleared the foreign medical graduate examination. It has also directed the state councils to ensure that no fee was charged from the FMGs for permitting them to complete their internship.

The NMC has also published guidelines for state medical councils to allow FMGs to participate in internships to ensure that the latter medical qualification or degree can be enrolled for each foreign exercise in which the degree has been awarded.
