NITI Aayog Releases Policy Report to Enhance State Public Universities

On Monday, NITI Aayog unveiled a comprehensive policy report titled Expanding Quality Higher Education through States and State Public Universities. This groundbreaking document provides deep insights into the standards of State Public Universities (SPUs) across India. The report was officially launched by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, alongside CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam and other senior officials.

B.V.R. Subrahmanyam underscored that NEP 2020 aims to double higher education enrollment by 2035, increasing the number of students from the current levels to nearly nine crore. Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, Vineet Joshi, outlined significant budget allocations and initiatives aimed at improving higher education:

• PM Research Fellows Program: Selection of 10,000 research scholars to enhance academic contributions.

• Expansion of Second-Generation IITs: Strengthening India’s technological education landscape.

• Bharatiya Bhasha Textbook Scheme: Promoting education in regional languages for better accessibility.

• PM-USHA Program (2023-24 to 2025-26): Allocation of ₹13,000 crore, with ₹100 crore designated per SPU for their transformation into Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERUs).

Dr. Pankaj Mittal, Secretary General of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), emphasized that the report addresses three critical challenges identified by vice-chancellors:
