News Synopsis

Millions of Meta product users, including those on Facebook and Instagram, will be notified of the company's updated privacy policies. The changes, according to Meta, are intended to make it easier to understand how customers' information is used. Regulators and campaigners have previously chastised the company for its use of customer data.

The update excludes WhatsApp and a few other products. Meta says the changes won't allow it to "collect, use or share your data in new ways". However, there are two changes to how users can control, how their information is processed.

By default, a new setting will give people more control over who can see their posts. Additionally, existing controls over which advertisements users see are consolidated into a single interface. In addition, the company is updating its terms of service.

Michel Protti, Meta's chief privacy officer, said in a blog post it wanted "to better explain what is expected from us and those who use our platforms". He stated that this would include when the company may disable or terminate accounts, as well as additional information on what happens when an account is deleted. Meta says it is also disclosing more information about the types of third parties with whom it shares and receives information, as well as how data is shared among its products.
