News Synopsis

An accident at a power generating plant led to a massive power outage in the major cities of Taiwan including the capital city of Taipei. According to a report by the state-backed Central News Agency, Wang Meihua, the economic affairs minister of Taiwan said that an accident had occurred in a power generating plant in the Southern region of the nation and the ministry will deal with it with utmost urgency. According to her, around five million households have been affected by this power outage. Taipower, a state-backed power operator informed that there has been an issue with the transformer at the Xingda power plant in the Kaohsiung district. They are currently working on getting back the power by activating backup power sources. The world's largest contract chipmaker, TSMC said that its factories around the nation have experienced fluctuation in power supply. Xingda power plant accounts for almost one-seventh of the total capacity of Taiwan’s power. Ms. Wang apologized and assured that the power supply will be restored in the country at the earliest. Livestream chat of Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen was canceled with the US ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo because of the power disruption. Traffic Police and fire truck were immediately deployed to swiftly deal with traffic and emergencies.
