News Synopsis

India's largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) recorded its highest ever dispatch in a financial year so far, delivering 2.33 lakh units by Railways last year, according to company executives.

In the 2021-22 financial year, the company's shipments increased by 23% from 1.89 lakh units, which were transported by Railways in 2020-21. Overall, automotive majors have helped transport approximately 11 lakh vehicles via Indian Railways over the past eight years, avoiding more than 4,800 tonnes of carbon emissions.

MSI Executive Director Rahul Bharti said the company continues to work on increasing its rail transport share from its current 15 percent. MSI was the first automobile manufacturer in the country to be licensed as an Automotive Freight Train Operator (AFTO) in 2013.

MSI is using six loading across Delhi-NCR and Gujarat currently and 16 destination terminals. Cars dispatched for North-Eastern states now reach in nearly eight days with the addition of Agartala and Silchar in 2019 and 2021 respectively. The company also said that this is 50% faster than road transportation, which normally takes around 16 days.
