News Synopsis

According to a recording of a company meeting obtained by The Verge, Mark Zuckerberg sees Apple as a significant competitor to Meta as the company tries to expand into the metaverse. According to Zuckerberg, when it comes to the metaverse, Apple and Meta are engaged in "very deep, philosophical competition."

A hypothetical version of the internet that is accessed through immersive technologies like VR and AR rather than through screens is referred to as the "metaverse" in science fiction. In order to reflect his intentions for the metaverse, Zuckerberg reorganised and rebranded the business, formerly known as Facebook, in October.

One distinction between Meta and Apple, according to Zuckerberg, is that while Apple, in his opinion, will develop a closed ecosystem for its metaverse technology, Meta will attempt to be more open. According to a lightly edited transcript of the call made available by The Verge, Zuckerberg said, "We're approaching this in an open way and trying to build a more open ecosystem."

He added that Meta is working to adapt its metaverse technology for Android phones. He also seemed to suggest Meta would beat Apple on price, per The Verge's transcript:

"We basically deliver our devices at cost or at a slight subsidy, or slightly more than cost in some cases. But the bottom line is our business is not primarily taking a premium on the devices. We want as many people to be interacting in there as possible. Part of that is having it be an open ecosystem that's interoperable."
