News Synopsis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has invited UK businesses to invest in the state, highlighting opportunities across manufacturing, technology, education, clean energy and infrastructure.

Maharashtra Invites UK Businesses to Explore Investment Opportunities

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called on businesses and institutions from the United Kingdom to invest in the state, highlighting its industrial capabilities, skilled workforce and business-friendly environment.

Speaking at the Maharashtra-UK Partnership Launch in Mumbai, Fadnavis said the state was working to bring together skills, capital and technology to create new opportunities for international investors.

He emphasised that Maharashtra offers significant potential across manufacturing, technology, education, clean energy and other emerging sectors. The initiative aims to strengthen economic ties between Maharashtra and the UK while encouraging partnerships that can generate business activity and employment.

Invest Maharashtra Platform to Facilitate Projects

Faster Coordination for Investors

Fadnavis said the state government would use its ‘Invest Maharashtra’ platform to improve coordination among departments and help businesses move investment projects forward.

The platform is intended to make it easier for companies to navigate government processes and obtain support for their proposed ventures.

The Chief Minister stressed that the visit of UK secretaries, mayors and senior officials should lead to practical outcomes rather than remain a formal diplomatic engagement.

MoUs Exchanged to Strengthen Cooperation

Following discussions between representatives from Maharashtra and the UK, memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were exchanged to promote collaboration across several sectors.

The agreements are intended to create opportunities for closer business engagement and institutional partnerships. Fadnavis expressed confidence that the discussions would translate into industrial projects, commercial opportunities and employment generation.

Mumbai and Pune Strengthen Maharashtra’s Investment Appeal

Mumbai as a Global Financial Centre

Fadnavis identified Mumbai as an important centre for finance, trade and entrepreneurship. Its established business ecosystem makes it a key destination for companies looking to expand their presence in India.

The city’s financial services network and international business connections provide opportunities for UK firms exploring partnerships and market expansion.

Pune’s Manufacturing and Technology Ecosystem

Pune was highlighted as a major centre for engineering, automobiles, manufacturing and information technology.

According to Fadnavis, Maharashtra’s skilled workforce, established industrial clusters and experienced business partners serving international clients make the state attractive to global investors.

These capabilities could support cooperation between British companies and local businesses, particularly in advanced manufacturing, engineering and technology-related industries.

Maharashtra Opens New Opportunities in Education and Research

Foreign Universities Encouraged to Establish Campuses

The Chief Minister highlighted the opportunities created by India's National Education Policy for foreign universities seeking to establish campuses in Maharashtra.

He cited the University of Bristol, the University of York and the University of Aberdeen among institutions establishing a presence in the state.

Such initiatives can help strengthen academic collaboration, research activity and access to international educational opportunities.

EduCity, Medicity and AI Innovation City

Fadnavis also referred to proposed projects such as EduCity, Medicity and AI Innovation City.

These initiatives are intended to bring together educational institutions, research facilities, healthcare capabilities and skilled professionals. They could help build specialised ecosystems supporting innovation, knowledge exchange and technology development.

The projects also reflect Maharashtra’s ambition to expand beyond traditional industrial sectors and attract investment in emerging knowledge-based industries.

Clean Energy and Sustainable Infrastructure in Focus

Fadnavis invited British companies to explore opportunities in clean energy, industrial emissions reduction, energy efficiency, water management, transportation and resource recycling.

These sectors are increasingly important as businesses and governments seek to improve resource use and adopt more sustainable industrial practices.

Cooperation in these areas could enable companies from both sides to share expertise, develop projects and explore technologies suited to industrial and urban requirements.

The Chief Minister also assured international companies of government support in setting up Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and technology research centres in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra-UK Partnership Could Expand Market Access

Fadnavis said the partnership could help Maharashtra-based manufacturers, food-processing businesses, technology companies and small entrepreneurs reach new customers in the UK.

Improved business connections could create opportunities for exports, investment and collaboration between companies in both markets.

He emphasised that the partnership should deliver measurable results beyond formal agreements, including industrial development, commercial activity and job creation.

The state government is seeking to use the UK engagement to strengthen Maharashtra’s international economic links and encourage long-term business relationships.

UK Delegation Highlights Maharashtra’s Economic Potential

Jonathan Reynolds Backs Stronger Business Ties

UK Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Trade Jonathan Reynolds described Maharashtra as a natural destination for British companies seeking to expand in India.

He highlighted the state’s economic strength, political stability and leadership. Reynolds also noted that Maharashtra’s economy was larger than Norway’s.

He said the delegation was focused on achieving tangible results rather than simply signing agreements. He expressed hope that stakeholders from Maharashtra and the UK would work together to deepen cooperation and support economic growth.

Senior Officials Attend Partnership Launch

The event was attended by Maharashtra Protocol Minister Jaykumar Rawal, Industries Department Principal Secretary P. Anbalagan, Chief Protocol Officer Rajesh Gawande and Chief Minister’s Investment Adviser Kaustubh Dhavse.

The UK delegation included Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Land Reform and Islands, Dame Angela Eagle; UK Secretary of State Douglas Alexander; Director for EU and International Trade Sophie Bryce; UK Deputy Trade Commissioner for South Asia Harshbir Sangha; and UK Trade Commissioner for South Asia and Deputy High Commissioner for Western India Harjinder Kang, alongside mayors and other senior officials.

Conclusion

Maharashtra is seeking to strengthen economic ties with the UK by promoting investment across manufacturing, technology, education, clean energy and infrastructure. The partnership aims to convert bilateral discussions into business projects, expanded market access and employment opportunities.
