News Synopsis

During his recent address to a vast audience of Indian Americans on the second day of his three-day visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's goal of becoming a global semiconductor manufacturing powerhouse. PM Modi spoke about India's rapid strides in technology, revealing that ‘Made in India’ semiconductor chips would soon find their place in devices worldwide.

India’s Growing Semiconductor Ambitions

“India is a launching pad for all sorts of technologies. We are not going to stop or slow down. Our goal is to have more devices worldwide running on Made in India chips,” declared Prime Minister Modi. He underscored India's enhanced manufacturing capabilities, particularly in electronics and semiconductors, which are driving the country closer to this ambitious target.

PM Modi further expressed optimism about the presence of Indian-made chips in the American market. “The day is not far when you will see Made in India chips here in America as well,” he added.

Semiconductor Manufacturing Expansion in India

In a significant move towards semiconductor self-reliance, the Indian government approved a major semiconductor project in Sanand, Gujarat, in June 2023. Prime Minister Modi shared updates on this progress during his speech, noting the recent laying of the foundation stone for Micron’s first semiconductor facility in India. Additionally, five such units have been approved across the country, representing a cumulative investment of ₹1.5 lakh crore.

“This small chip will elevate India’s development to new heights, and this is my guarantee,” he said, reflecting his confidence in the transformational impact that these projects will have on India’s economy.

Digital Public Infrastructure and India’s Global Leadership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shed light on India's rapid advancements in digital public infrastructure (DPI), remarking that the country is no longer trailing behind but is, instead, leading the world with its innovative systems. “Now India does not lag behind; it creates new systems and leads. India has introduced the concept of digital public infrastructure (DPI) to the world,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister drew attention to the country's extraordinary rise in the 5G sector, surpassing the U.S. in just two years. He also revealed that work is already underway on ‘Made in India’ 6G technologies. “This was possible because we implemented policies that promote this sector,” he stated.

India’s Rise in Mobile Manufacturing and Commitment to Green Energy

India’s transformation in mobile technology was also a point of pride for PM Modi, as he highlighted the nation’s shift from being a net mobile importer to a dominant player in mobile manufacturing. He also reaffirmed the country’s dedication to climate change mitigation, saying, “Our conviction for reforms is unprecedented. Our Green Energy Transition programme exemplifies this. Despite having 17% of the world’s population, India’s contribution to global carbon emissions is only 4%. We have chosen the path of green energy transition.”

The Prime Minister cited India’s “Panchamrit” strategy announced during COP26 in 2021, which outlines five key goals, including achieving 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity and reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030. India also aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 45% and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.

Strengthening U.S.-India Collaborations

Later on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi is expected to meet with the CEOs of leading U.S. technology companies to strengthen collaborations between India and the U.S. in cutting-edge sectors such as AI, quantum computing, semiconductors, biotechnology, and more. This meeting will build on the strong economic and technological ties between the two nations, with the goal of fostering further innovation and growth in these critical industries.

Conclusion

Prime Minister Modi's address in New York underscores India's ambitious drive to become a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, digital infrastructure, and green energy. With significant investments and policy support, India is positioning itself at the forefront of technological innovation, from ‘Made in India’ semiconductor chips to leading advancements in 5G and 6G technologies.

Modi's speech also highlights the country’s rapid transition from being a mobile importer to a key player in the global market, reflecting India’s broader goal of self-reliance in critical industries. Additionally, India’s commitment to climate change mitigation, through its Green Energy Transition and Panchamrit strategy, reinforces its role as a responsible global player.

By fostering stronger collaborations with U.S.-based tech leaders, India is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of technology and sustainable development on a global scale.
