Lulu calls for Glasgow to win the Eurovision contest

Lulu, a previous Eurovision winner, wants Glasgow, Scotland, to host the next competition. The singer claimed that the city was "music mad" and would produce "the most fabulous hosts" on BBC Two's Newsnight.

It follows the announcement by the contest's organisers that the UK would host the competition instead of Ukraine, which took first place in this year's competition due to the ongoing conflict in that nation. Glasgow is currently vying with other cities for the honour.

The competition will be held in the UK for the ninth time next year, but Scotland has only served as host once, in 1972, when the competition took place in Edinburgh's Usher Hall.

"It has to be Glasgow because that's where I come from," said Lulu.

"They're so politically savvy, they're the most fabulous hosts, they absolutely are music mad. I think it would be just the most fabulous thing, and I would be there. I just cannot wait."

Lulu, whose real name is Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie, had her first hit on the charts at the age of 15 in 1964 when she covered Shout by the Isley Brothers.

She performed the song Boom Bang-a-Bang to represent the UK at the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest when she was only 20 years old. That evening, it received votes as one of four joint winners.

In addition, Lulu is well-known for her roles in To Sir, with Love (1967), in which she co-starred with Sidney Poitier, and The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), in which she sang the theme song.
