News Synopsis

Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala will be inaugurating a new solar power plant on March 6th. The solar power plant is installed in the Payyanur town of the Kannur district. The solar power plant has been developed by the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL). Kochi International Airport is currently operated by CIAL, and it happens to be the world’s first airport to be fully powered by solar energy. The capacity of the new solar power plant is 12 MW. S Suhas, managing director of CIAL said that they were able to install 35% extra solar panel and it is the first Terrain based installation in South India. The Payyanur Solar power plant is spread across 2.75 acres. The combined capacity of the group’s solar power plants will now reach 50 MW with the inauguration of this newly built solar power plant. Now CIAL’S all power plants will together generate 2 lakh units of electricity each day, much greater than the daily consumption of Kochi International Airport which stands at 1.6 lakh units. Projects like these will surely propel India in its journey to increase its green energy capacity and to decrease its dependency on coal-based power plants.
