News Synopsis

Iran's state shipping company has begun the first shipment of Russian products to India using a new trade corridor across the Islamic Republic, Iran's port officials said.

The Russian cargo consisting of two 40-foot containers made of plywood, weighing 41 tons, had left St. Petersburg for the port city of Astrakhan on the Caspian Sea. The Islamic Republic, quoted Dariush Jamali, director of a jointly owned Iran-Russia terminal in Astrakhan.

The report did not say when the shipment, which it described as an initial "pilot" trip to inspect the corridor, had left or provide further details about the cargo in the shipment.

From Astrakhan, cargo will cross the Caspian Sea to the port of Anzali in northern Iran and is transshipped by road to the port of Bandar Abbas in the southern Persian Gulf. From there, it will be loaded onto a ship and sent to the Indian port of Nhava Sheva, IRNA said.

According to Jamali the transfer is coordinated and managed by the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines Group and its regional offices in Russia and India and is expected to take 25 days.
