News Synopsis

Ukrainian officials said the Ukrainian Internet service provider used by its military was hit by a massive cyberattack on Monday, saying that Russia would use more dangerous digital weapons in the second month of the war.

The cyberattack on Ukrtelecom PJSC was described by some experts as the most harmful cyberattack since the invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have said that they had repelled the attack and that the company will restore its services as well, according to a statement from Ukraine’s State Service of Special Communication and Information Protection, which is also responsible for cybersecurity in the country.

The agency did not say who was responsible for the cyberattack. Russia has also denied involvement in cyberattacks. Once the attack started, Ukrtelecom started limiting its services to the majority of its business and consumer customers to reserve capacity for the military.

Cybersecurity experts and US authorities were surprised that no major disruptive or destructive cyberattacks took place during the Ukrainian conflict. Russia is widely regarded as one of the most capable government-sponsored hacking groups in the world. Moscow was also accused of launching targeted cyberattacks that disrupted Ukraine's government, electricity grid and financial services.
