Instagram and WhatsApp May Get Paid AI Features as Meta Prepares Subscription Rollout
News Synopsis
Meta Platforms is reportedly preparing to roll out a new subscription plan that could introduce paid AI-powered features across its major apps—WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. According to a recent report, the move is aimed at offering users enhanced productivity, creativity tools, and advanced AI capabilities without disrupting the core free experience.
Core Meta Apps Will Remain Free
According to TechCrunch, Meta does not plan to put basic app functionality behind a paywall. The report states that the company intends to only “give users access to special features and more control over how they share and connect.” This suggests that messaging, posting, and browsing will continue to be free for everyday users.
Meta is also reportedly avoiding a one-size-fits-all pricing model. Instead, it will experiment with different subscription tiers and feature bundles, with each app offering its own exclusive paid tools.
AI Features Likely to Be Central to the Subscription
Vibes Video Generator May Shift to Freemium Model
One of the standout AI tools expected to be included in Meta’s subscription offering is Vibes, the AI-powered video generator. “Vibes” launched in September last year and allows users to generate and remix AI-created videos directly in their feeds.
While the feature has remained free since launch, Meta now reportedly plans to move Vibes to a freemium access model, where advanced video creation tools would require a paid subscription.
Manus AI Agents to Play a Key Role
Meta is also expected to bundle its recently acquired AI agents, known as Manus, into its subscription plans. Meta Platforms acquired Manus—a company founded in China and based in Singapore—for a reported $2 billion ( around Rs 183,374,990) in December.
According to the report, "Meta is taking a two-fold approach to Manus." This includes deeper integration of Manus into Meta’s consumer apps, while also offering separate subscription plans for businesses.
Tipster Alessandro Paluzzi recently shared screenshots indicating that Meta is already testing Manus AI integration on Instagram, hinting that rollout preparations are underway.
What Paid Features Could Look Like on Instagram
While details around WhatsApp and Facebook subscriptions remain unclear, early information suggests Instagram could receive several premium tools. Paluzzi claims the new Instagram subscription may allow users to:
-
Create unlimited audience lists
-
See which followers do not follow them back
-
View Instagram Stories anonymously
These features appear aimed at creators, influencers, and power users looking for deeper insights and audience control.
WhatsApp and Facebook Subscription Details Still Unclear
At present, Meta has not disclosed what the subscription experience will look like for WhatsApp and Facebook. However, given WhatsApp’s growing focus on business messaging and AI-driven tools, paid features could eventually include advanced automation, AI chat assistance, or productivity enhancements.
Subscription Will Be Separate From Meta Verified
Meta clarified to TechCrunch that this upcoming subscription will remain separate from Meta Verified, the company’s existing paid verification program. However, Meta plans to apply insights gained from Meta Verified to improve this new offering.
The goal, according to the report, is to build a subscription service that appeals not only to creators and businesses but also to everyday users looking for more control, creativity, and AI-powered functionality.
