India’s banana export increases by 703%

Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, confirmed on Tuesday that India's banana exports have increased eightfold in the last nine years during the April-May period.

Banana exports have increased from Rs 26 crore in April-May 2013 to Rs 213 crore in April-May 2022. This represents a staggering 703 percent increase, he added.

According to Goyal, the increase in the country's banana export is due to the adoption of global-standard farming practices.
India is the world's leading banana producer, accounting for approximately 25% of total output. More than 70% of the country's banana production is contributed by Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export and Development Authority (APEDA) promotes agricultural and processed food product exports by assisting exporters through various components of its scheme, including Infrastructure Development, Quality Development, and Market Development.

APEDA also organizes international Buyer Seller Meets and virtual trade fairs with importing countries in order to promote agricultural and processed food products.
