India to Launch Anti-Drone Unit Amid Rising Drone Interceptions on Pakistan Border

News Synopsis
The official data reveals a sharp rise in drone activities along India’s borders with Pakistan. More than 260 drones have been intercepted or recovered this year, a significant increase compared to 110 drones in 2023. The majority of these drones, suspected of carrying arms and drugs, were neutralized in Punjab, with a smaller number intercepted in Rajasthan and Jammu.
Union Home Minister Announces Anti-Drone Initiative
Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the growing seriousness of the drone threat while addressing BSF troops during the force’s 60th Raising Day event. He announced plans to establish a comprehensive anti-drone unit to secure India's borders. Shah highlighted that a laser-equipped, anti-drone gun-mounted system has shown encouraging results, increasing drone neutralization rates from 3% to 55%.
Collaborative Efforts to Combat the Drone Menace
Shah outlined a "whole-of-government" approach to tackle the drone issue. This initiative involves collaboration among defense and research organizations, including DRDO, to develop advanced anti-drone technology. He reiterated the government’s commitment to deploying these resources to safeguard the borders effectively.
Comprehensive Border Management and Infrastructure Development
The minister also reviewed ongoing border security projects, including the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS), aimed at enhancing surveillance on India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Shah noted that the CIBMS implementation in Assam’s Dhubri area has shown promising results but requires further improvements.
Focus on Vibrant Village Programme (VVP)
Shah highlighted the Modi government’s Vibrant Village Programme, which focuses on developing infrastructure and mainstreaming remote frontier villages. With a budget allocation of ₹48,000 crore, this program aims to bring prosperity to about 3,000 border villages. Shah described the initiative as a cornerstone of India's border security strategy.
Strengthening Border Security Forces
The BSF, tasked with guarding over 6,300 kilometers of India's borders, continues to play a vital role in ensuring national security. Shah noted that the Modi government has sanctioned significant funds for improving border infrastructure, including fencing, roads, and new border posts. He also emphasized the importance of the BSF’s dedication to achieving India's global recognition by 2047.
Drone Interceptions and Modernization of BSF
BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary shared updates on the increasing number of drones carrying arms and drugs from across the Pakistan border. He stated that over 250 drones have been intercepted this year. A DRDO-developed anti-drone system has been deployed to counter this growing threat effectively. Additionally, newly trained BSF personnel are being deployed, with thousands more undergoing training to strengthen operational capabilities.
