News Synopsis

Due to the annual monsoon rains, many Sugar Producers have failed to move their supplies from factories to ports. India has extended the deadline for the export of 800,000 tonnes of sugar by two weeks, the government announced today.

The largest manufacturer of the sweetener in the world had allowed export of the sugar mills until July 5, but several mills failed to do so due to heavy rains.

Therefore, the sugar mills are now permitted to export the sugar till July 20, according to the official sources.

Sugar industry is an important agro-based industry in the country. It affects rural livelihood of about 50 million sugarcane farmers. More than five lakh workers are directly working in sugar mills.

India is the second largest producer of sugar in the world after Brazil and is also the largest consumer.
