India highlights the Role of the PM-GKAY Scheme in Ensuring Food Security

News Synopsis

At a seminar at the World Trade Organisation, India showcased its flagship Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY), which played a significant role in making sure additional food security for around 800 million people during the Covid-19 pandemic. The officials informed that under the PM-GKAY scheme, the Indian Government is providing 5 kg food grain per person per month free of cost to 80 crore people covered by the National Food Security Act (NFSA). This 5 kg food grain is additional to the highly subsidise monthly quota under the NFSA. On Thursday, in a press release, the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs told that India's food security policies and innovations that show the government's concern towards poor and underprivileged sections of society were appreciated by participants in the WTO seminar from different nations around the world.

The seminar was conducted by the World Trade Organization in Geneva on April 26 regarding Food Security. The seminar was held to facilitate dialogue on trade and food security among WTO officials, policymakers, experts from international organizations, and think tanks. Joint Secretary in the Department of Food and Public Distribution, S Jagannathan, highlighted the exceptional experience of the nation in successfully ensuring access to adequate food grains to the most vulnerable people in the country, especially during COVID.
