News Synopsis

The Commerce Ministry announced on Friday that India exported 2.47 lakh metric tonnes of alcoholic products worth USD 322.12 million (approximately Rs 2,507 crore) during 2020-21. United Arab Emirates, Ghana, Singapore, Congo, and Cameroon are among the major export destinations for Indian alcoholic beverages.

According to the report, demand for Indian products such as malt beer, wine, white wine, brandy, whisky, rum, and gin has increased dramatically in the global market.

Several workshops and wine tasting events have been held by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) at various international trade fairs to raise awareness about the potential of local wines.

The Indian wine industry grew at a compound annual growth rate of 14% from 2010 to 2017, making it the country's fastest-growing alcoholic beverage industry, according to the report. APEDA facilitated the participation of ten exporters in the London Wine Fair 2022 in order to boost wine exports.

“Moreover, they have completely ignored the product-specific subsidies that they give that cause distortion in global farm trade,” the official said. These subsidies are known as Aggregate Mmeasurements of Support or AMS, and the US, EU, and Canada provide $160 billion in AMS to products such as cotton, wool, and tobacco.
