News Synopsis

India’s automobile industry recorded 18.2% sales growth in Q2 FY27, driven by strong passenger vehicle demand, rising two-wheeler sales, improved affordability and infrastructure-led economic activity.

India’s Automobile Sales Reach Record High in Q2 FY27

India’s domestic automobile sales across four major vehicle categories increased by 18.2% year-on-year to a record 83.88 lakh units during July–September 2026, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles all registered their highest-ever second-quarter sales for a financial year. The performance reflected broad-based demand across personal mobility, commercial transportation and other vehicle segments.

Industry growth was supported by improved affordability following GST 2.0, steady demand from rural and urban markets, healthy freight movement and infrastructure-related economic activity. A gradual vehicle replacement cycle also contributed to sales momentum.

Passenger Vehicle Sales Rise 30.7%

Passenger vehicle sales increased by 30.7% year-on-year to 13.61 lakh units during the quarter, making it one of the strongest-performing segments in the domestic market.

Utility Vehicles Lead Passenger Vehicle Demand

Utility vehicles remained the leading category, accounting for 68% of total passenger vehicle sales. Sales in this category rose 34.2% compared with the corresponding period last year.

The continued preference for utility vehicles supported overall passenger vehicle growth, while passenger car sales also recorded a healthy increase of 24.9%.

Improved affordability, new model offerings and sustained consumer demand contributed to the segment’s performance.

Two-Wheeler Sales Increase 15.2%

Two-wheeler sales grew 15.2% year-on-year to 64.33 lakh units in Q2 FY27, making this category the largest contributor to domestic automobile volumes.

Scooters Outperform Motorcycles

Scooter sales increased by 27.7%, while motorcycle sales rose 7.4% during the quarter.

The difference in growth rates highlights stronger momentum in the scooter category compared with motorcycles. Overall, demand across two-wheelers benefited from the need for personal mobility and continued purchases in both rural and urban markets.

The segment’s performance also played a significant role in lifting total domestic automobile sales to a new quarterly record.

Three-Wheeler Sales Grow 23.6%

Domestic three-wheeler sales increased by 23.6% year-on-year to 2.85 lakh units during July–September 2026.

Three-wheelers remain important for passenger transport and last-mile connectivity, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas. Their growth reflects demand for accessible mobility solutions and vehicles used for commercial transportation.

The segment’s record second-quarter performance added to the automobile industry’s overall expansion.

Commercial Vehicle Sales Rise 28.7%

Commercial vehicle sales climbed 28.7% year-on-year to 3.09 lakh units during Q2 FY27.

The increase was supported by healthy freight movement, infrastructure-led economic activity and demand for vehicles used to transport goods and support commercial operations.

Infrastructure development and business activity can influence demand for trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles. The strong quarterly performance indicated continued momentum in this segment.

Automobile Exports Record Mixed Performance

India’s automobile exports recorded growth in three of the four major vehicle categories during the quarter, although passenger vehicle shipments declined.

Two-Wheeler and Three-Wheeler Exports Increase

Two-wheeler exports rose 27.7% to 16.5 lakh units, reaching their highest-ever second-quarter level. Three-wheeler exports increased by 30.4% to 1.6 lakh units.

These gains highlighted continued demand for Indian-made vehicles in overseas markets.

Commercial Vehicle Exports Surge

Commercial vehicle exports increased 72.5% to more than 41,000 units. The sharp rise marked a strong performance for the category compared with the same quarter a year earlier.

Passenger Vehicle Exports Decline

Passenger vehicle exports fell 5.2% to 2.29 lakh units. According to the information provided, the decline was mainly linked to a higher comparison base and logistics constraints associated with the West Asia crisis.

The contrasting export trends show that overseas demand and shipping conditions continued to affect vehicle categories differently.

SIAM Sees Scope for Festive Season Growth

SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon highlighted the record sales achieved across the four major domestic vehicle segments.

SIAM President Shenu Agarwal expressed cautious optimism about the industry’s ability to maintain momentum during the festive season. New vehicle launches, infrastructure spending, fleet replacement and increasing demand for last-mile mobility are expected to support sales in the second half of FY27.

However, the industry remains exposed to risks such as higher inflation, possible interest rate increases and geopolitical uncertainty. These factors could influence consumer purchasing decisions, financing costs and vehicle production or distribution.

Outlook for India’s Automobile Industry in FY27

The record performance in Q2 FY27 points to strong demand across India’s automobile market. Passenger vehicles and two-wheelers delivered substantial sales volumes, while three-wheelers and commercial vehicles also recorded double-digit growth.

The industry’s ability to sustain this momentum will depend on consumer affordability, rural and urban demand, infrastructure activity and the availability of new models. Export performance will also remain important, particularly as manufacturers navigate international market conditions and logistical challenges.

Overall, the second quarter provided a strong start to the second half of the financial year, although economic and geopolitical risks warrant continued attention.

Conclusion

India’s automobile sales rose 18.2% to a record 83.88 lakh units in Q2 FY27, with all four major vehicle segments achieving their highest-ever second-quarter sales. Improved affordability, strong demand and infrastructure activity supported growth, while mixed export trends and economic uncertainties remain important factors for the industry’s outlook.
